White (Composite) Fillings
Composite fillings allow you to restore decayed teeth while maintaining a natural appearance. As compared to traditional silver fillings, these composite or white fillings are mercury-free and bonded to your tooth improving the integrity of the remaining tooth. White fillings are a popular dental treatment for repairing cavities or small chips in the teeth.
What Are White Fillings
Tooth-coloured or ‘white’ fillings are made from composite and resin materials, which come in different shades to match your natural tooth shade for a near-invisible finish. They are generally favoured among conventional filling materials due to their looks and the ability to bond to tooth tissue, allowing for less tooth preparation and conservation of natural tissue.
Why Do I Need A Filling?
Fillings are required for various reasons, whether it be cosmetic, dental wear, or tooth decay. They can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth, so they are much less visible than amalgam (silver) fillings.
Treatment Steps
The area to be treated is numbed with a local anaesthetic and the decayed area of the tooth removed. The colour-matched shade of the composite is then applied in layers. Finally, each layer is hardened with a special bright light and the resin shaped to provide a functional restoration.
Once the filling procedure is complete, you will be able to use the tooth like any other tooth. You can eat and drink normally and you shouldn’t feel any discomfort. The time taken for the procedure varies for each patient but on average this treatment can usually be completed within a one hour appointment.
